11 Groundbreaking Sci-Fi Shows You're Not Watching, Ranked
How does one define groundbreaking? Some might say that, to be groundbreaking, a show must be innovative and have an impact. While the list of groundbreaking science fiction shows undoubtedly includes series that became cult classics after cancellations like Fringe, The Expanse, or truly any Star Trek branch, it’s fair to assume you’ve either watched them all or are familiar enough with them to decide if they’re worth your time. Other shows that might be expected on this list are Wynonna Earp, which has a still active and rabid fan base even as it went off the air in 2021. All that to say, here are some incredible sci-fi shows that you have likely missed.
5. The Ark' (2023 - Present)
The Ark follows the crew of a spacecraft known as Ark One, some of the last living Earthlings on their way to a new planet. When a catastrophic event kills the leadership, the remaining crew must work together to stay alive. Although introduced as a spaceship survival show, The Ark is truly a riveting found family drama, with an incredibly talented cast at its core. Fronting the ensemble is the incomparable Christie Burke and her elegant portrayal of Sharon Garnet, a determined woman with secrets whose passionate leadership inspires the crew. Supporting Garnet are Lt. Lane (Reece Ritchie), a frenemy whose friction with Garnet results in her becoming even stronger, and Lt. Brice, played by the undeniably charming Richard Fleeshman, who not only provides eye-candy and funny quips but also infuses unexpected depth into a character that risks being one-dimensional. They all enrapture with help from a few geniuses, Alicia (Stacey Read) and Angus (Ryan Adams), as well as The White Lotus’ Shalini Peiris as Dr. Kabir.
3. 'The Librarians: The Next Chapter' (2025 - Present)
The Librarians: The Next Chapter is the latest edition of The Librarians franchise, introducing a new group tasked by the mysterious library to collect magical artifacts to keep the world safe. While it could technically be considered a fantasy series, this property knows how to “science the magic." Building on the intricate foundation set by a trilogy of TV movies starring Noah Wyle (The Pitt), The Next Chapter follows a rogue librarian (Callum McGowan) from the past who finds himself trapped in the present with a team of misfit geniuses, played by Olivia Morris and Bluey Robinson. Rounding out the exciting cast are Jessica Green and Carolyn Loncq, who both add to the playful nature of the bewitching show. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Dean Devlin project without many Easter eggs tying it to his other properties, so the first season includes a highly necessary cameo from Christian Kane.
