The second feature written, directed and produced by Brooklyn native Irving Franco, Adam the First follows a 14-year-old boy who travels across the country to meet a series of men who could be his father. Stepping into the lead role of Adam is Oakes Fegley (The Goldfinch, Pete’s Dragon). Completing the ensemble cast are Larry Pine (The Royal Tenenbaums, Maid in Manhattan), T.R. Knight (The Flight Attendant, Grey’s Anatomy), Eric Hanson (Big George Foreman, Nefarious), Kim Jackson Harris (The Other Black Girl, Cruel Summer) and acclaimed actor David Duchovny (What Happens Later, The X-Files, Californication).

Alongside the trailer, you can also check out the official synopsis for the movie below:

“Adam the First follows Adam, who sets out on a cross-country adventure to track down a series of men who could be his estranged father, each one with a different life that could become his own.”

Oakes Fegley, at age 19, has already starred in numerous film and television vehicles with such Hollywood luminaries as Nicole Kidman, Michelle Williams, Jeffrey Wright, Julianne Moore, Robert Redford, Christopher Walken and Robert DeNiro. Most recently he starred opposite Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly in Dark Matter, a new series for Apple TV+.

Golden Globe-winning David Duchovny, meanwhile, is best known for his portrayal of FBI Agent Fox Mulder in the groundbreaking television series The X-Files. As the lead in Californication, Duchovny played a celebrated novelist and womanizer whose fast living turns out to be slower than he imagined. Duchovny is also an author in his own right, with five books to his name.

Franco also co-composed the music for the film with longtime friend and musical collaborator, Michael Grazi. Franco’s filmmaking debut, Cheerleader enjoyed a successful run on the festival circuit and has garnered numerous awards and ongoing accolades. The filmmaker has released a statement regarding Adam the First, in which he describes the project as both "an epic journey, and something deeply personal."

“With Adam The First, I intend to make a film that is both an epic journey, and something deeply personal. This is a film that will bring the grand scale adventure, and magic realism of films such as Kill Bill, Barry Lyndon, and The Wild Bunch, to meet the sense of wonder, humanity, and contemplation of films such as Badlands, Days of Heaven, and Paris Texas. Adam is a young boy who is trying to find his father and make sense of the world around him.

Lacking a father figure to emulate creates a deep sense of confusion within him but allows for an open mindedness to each potential father's way of life. Over the course of Adam's adventures, we find that no matter how different the lifestyle, or how unusual the framework through which you see the world, there will always be a consistent commonality between people. That common denominator is humanity and the great experience of struggle, longing, and need for love, that we all possess. In this way, my hope is to tell a story that is both universal and timeless."

Adam the First is due to open in theaters across the U.S. on February 14, courtesy of North America by Electric Entertainment.
